The Indiana Republican Party has scheduled a caucus to fill the legislative seat currently held by Sen. Jon Ford, R-Terre Haute, and is seeking candidates to run for the District 38 vacancy.

The caucus will be at 10 a.m. Oct. 7 at Northview High School Auditorium, 3150 W. State Road 40, Brazil. Republican precinct committee members will select the person to fill the remaining three years of Ford’s term.

Last week, Ford (pictured above) announced his resignation from the Indiana Senate effective Oct. 16. He is the fourth Republican legislator to resign from the Indiana General Assembly this year.

Ford did not give a reason for his decision, when he announced on Sept. 15 that he would resign.

According to State Affairs Pro Indiana, Ford is stepping down from the legislature and will join Reliable Energy, a nonprofit that advocates for the coal industry and other fossil fuel producers in Indiana.

Ford, whose district covers Vigo and Clay counties and a portion of Sullivan County, was first elected to the Statehouse in 2014, was re-elected in 2018 and successfully ran for a third term in 2022. In the legislature, he most recently served as chair of the Senate Committee on Elections and was the ranking member on the Senate Committee on Family and Children Services.

Also, Ford was chair of the Interim Study Committee on Elections this year. However the committee was not assigned any topics to review and has no meetings scheduled. He had also been appointed to serve on the Midwestern Higher Education Compact Committee.

The GOP is planning to livestream the caucus to find his replacement.
